Evaluate the Risk
Begin by assessing the potential risks associated with the spill, including the type and quantity of the material involved. This evaluation should consider the potential impacts on people, the environment, and property. To gather information about the spilled substance, refer to the container’s label or consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Choose Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Review the SDS and relevant literature to determine the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the situation. Gloves and suits are commonly used PPE, but if you are unable to identify the liquid and its properties, it is advisable to opt for the highest level of protection available.
Contain the Spill
Take immediate action to contain the spill effectively. This may involve blocking or diverting the spill to prevent contamination of water sources and facilitate cleanup. Utilize sorbents to absorb the spilled substance, and consider employing non-absorbent barriers as well.
Stop the Source
Address the root cause of the spill by stopping the source. This could entail closing a valve, sealing a leak, or stabilizing a damaged container. In some cases, it may be necessary to transfer the liquid from the compromised container to a secure overpack or another suitable vessel.
Execute Cleanup Measures
Swiftly employ chemically-compatible sorbents to capture and manage the spilled liquid. While sorbents effectively absorb the liquid, keep in mind that they do not alter its properties. Consequently, it is essential to dispose of saturated sorbents in the same manner as the original liquid. Proper containment of spill remnants may involve utilizing Over Packs or Salvage Drums.
Perform Decontamination
Prioritize the health and safety of responders and others involved by decontaminating the affected area. Neutralize or remove any hazardous materials present, ensuring their proper disposal. This process may include addressing any exposed soil or other environmental elements.
Generate Comprehensive Reports
Fulfill all necessary medical and incident notifications, as well as report requirements mandated by your organization, local authorities, and applicable state and federal regulations. Thoroughly document the spill incident, ensuring compliance with all reporting obligations.
